“This onigiri workshop was a wonderful, fun and interactive experience from start to finish. I learned a lot about the history of onigiri, its cultural significance in Japan, and the different ways it has evolved over time. The workshop was well organized, and the instructions were easy to follow, even for beginners.”
miku a · Tripadvisor · Jul 2026“A delicious introduction to Japanese home cooking. Instead of simply following a recipe, we gained a deeper understanding of the traditions behind bento and onigiri and the role they play in everyday in Japanese life. The small-group setting made it feel personal, relaxed, and engaging through the entire two hours.”
Sam W · Tripadvisor · Jun 2026“This was a wonderful and authentic experience! Nana shared the history of bento and onigiri while teaching us how to make delicious gluten-free and vegan Japanese food. The class felt like learning family recipes, with a real homemade touch and so much care put into every detail.”
Cayelyn S · Tripadvisor · Jun 2026“This class was a wonderful insight into family recipes of Japanese culture. Learning how to make these bento and onigiri was a master class in storytelling and instruction. The host was gracious and made sure to be with us every step of the way as we created our own onigiri and bento giving us vegan and gluten-free options along the way.”
trevor h · Tripadvisor · Jun 2026“That was a really good experience, Nana explained how to make onigiris but also the historic background of it. It took place inside their gluten free restaurant and all the staff looked passionate about it.”
briac b · Tripadvisor · Jul 2026“This experience should definitely be on your list if you are coming to Tokyo! We had a lovely time learning about onigiri from Nana, played a fun and educating quiz and you got to win a prize in the end! We then had a demonstration on how you can make onigiri and we got to make a lot of them and try to make it in many different ways and be creative. After finishing we got to enjoy our onigiri with some fried chicken, miso soup and japanese omelet which was sooooo good, and in the end we even had a refreshing dessert! Thank you so much for this amazing tour, it was time well spent!”

About this experience
Have you ever tried the onigiri from 7-Eleven? For many travellers that is their first taste of Japan's favourite convenience food. This class shows you the homemade tradition behind it.
Your experience starts with a warm welcome from the family who run the restaurant. You learn how onigiri serves as a daily snack and part of bento box culture, and you use handcrafted tableware made by local artisans.
Next a Japanese mum shows you how to handle the hot rice and shape it. Then you make your own onigiri with salmon, bonito flakes or miso, and eat them with homemade miso soup and tamagoyaki. Take a bento box for the road if you like.
